After earning his B.A., Fr. Sorgie was admitted to St. Joseph's Seminary to complete his master's degree. He was ordained a deacon in December of 1981 and spent his diaconate year at St. Boniface Church. After his ordination to the priesthood on November 6, 1982, Fr. Sorgie continued his ministry at St. Boniface Church until 1986. At that time, Terence Cardinal Cooke assigned him to pursue graduate studies in music at Columbia University. On completion of his doctoral courses, John Cardinal O'Connor appointed Fr. Sorgie to the faculty of St. Joseph's Seminary as Professor and Director of Sacred Music and as Adjunct Spiritual Director. Fr. Sorgie spent 15 years (1985-2000) at the Major Seminary. He was Director and Professor of Liturgy and Homiletics and the Dean of Admissions. He was awarded a Doctorate in Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, was nominated for the position as Academic Dean, and finally served Msgr. Francis McAree as his Vice Rector until October 3, 2000. Fr. Sorgie was appointed Pastor of St. Benedict Church in the Bronx on October 4, 2000. He has served on many Archdiocesan and international committees and projects both in sacred music and art and seminary formation. He has spoken throughout the country and in many parts of the world. The only commitment he retains is the teaching of an annual course in Latin Gregorian Chant in Rome each winter. Fr. Sorgie continues to be a member of the Archdiocesan Personnel Board which the Archbishop entrusts with the task of assigning all of our priests. Fr. Sorgie was assigned as Parochial Vicar to St. James the Apostle Church on August 14, 2001. He was appointed Pastor on July 1, 2004. As priest and educator, Fr. Sorgie is committed to and supportive of Catholic education; in particular the continuation of the excellent education offered at St. James the Apostle School.
